Cinderella

Synopsis

The story of Cinderella is very old and is believed to be of Eastern origin. In Egypt, she is not Cinderella but Psammetichus. She appears in 16th century Germany and is in early French fairy tales as Cendrillon, or as Cendroi. Her story is known in every European and quite a few Eastern languages but – not with a glass slipper! In the translation from the French, “vair” meaning fur was incorrectly written as “verre” meaning glass. Cinderella has had a glass slipper ever since.

Naughty Marietta

The Synopsis

Captain Dick Warrington and his men arrive in New Orleans both to capture Bras Pique, the pirate, & to find Contessa Marietta D’Altena. She has fled from a forced marriage disguised as one of the Casket Girls, prospective brides for the settlers. Marietta discloses herself to Dick, who reluctantly agrees to disguise her as Rafaello, the long lost son of the Marionette Theatre owner, Rudolpho. At the Quadroon Ball Etienne Grandet, the son of the Lieutenant Governor, outs his sultry slave, Adah, up for auction & Dick buys her. Angrily, Marietta announces her identity & agrees to marry Etienne. Dick frees Adah, who reveals Etienne’s secret – he is Bras Pique! However, he shifts the blame to Silas, the Governor’s whipping boy, who had pretended to be Bras Pique to impress the girls. Marietta finally learns the truth, & when Dick sings her “Dream Melody”, all ends happily in the tradition of musical comedy.
